Step 2 - In the hospital workshop

In the workshop the cast was sealed up along the cut and the foot closed in. The plaster leg was then filled with liquid plater of paris and left to dry.


When dry the original cast was cut off leaving a positive mould of my leg!


To make the calipers which are known as KAFO's (knee ankle foot orthoses), plastic sheets were heated until they are very flexible and they were then laid over the positive legs and cut to shape. Lengths of steel were attached and joints put in the middle.
